2018 Grants

The Consumer Health Foundation (CHF) is committed to advancing racial equity in the Washington, DC region. We believe that to achieve health equity, we must also achieve racial equity and economic justice. Our racial equity approach includes the following elements:

  • Grounding our work in history so that we better understand how past social policies led to current conditions affecting communities of color
  • Disaggregating data by race and place to identify groups and places where an intervention is most likely to create the biggest impact
  • Using a racial equity impact assessment tool to help us consider policy solutions that will match the scale of challenges born out of decades of systemic racism
  • Organizing communities so that people with lived experience lead the development of solutions
  • Working with elected officials and agency leaders to educate them about solutions that they can formulate into policies, programs and systems changes to advance racial equity

This year, CHF issued a Request for Proposals that required the use of a Racial Equity Impact Assessment tool which was revised based on feedback from nonprofit organizations. The tool is one of the elements of our racial equity approach. We also required applicants to submit a diversity matrix on the racial/ethnic and gender composition of the organization’s board, management, and other staff. CHF will continue implementing a field building approach to our advocacy grantmaking based on the intersection of our racial equity approach, the racial equity impact assessment tool and the diversity matrix.
