CHF's Membership

The Consumer Health Foundation was created from the sale of the Group Health Association (GHA), a nonprofit, cooperative Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), to Humana, a for-profit HMO.

Since our genesis was in a cooperative HMO, when the foundation was launched, the board decided that there should be a membership, just as there had been at GHA – to keep us in touch with and deeply rooted in the community. 

Our initial members were predominantly those who had received or provided care at GHA (patients, physicians, nurses and others).  Over the years, our membership has grown to include hundreds of others in the region who are committed to CHF’s mission – people who are dedicated to achieving health justice in our community and to fostering a greater consumer role in health.
